North Slope Alaska, August 1-14, 1969. This collection of images was taken August 1-14, 1969, by Theodore R. Merrell during a trip to collect fish for DDT analysis as part of a nation-wide survey. Travel was by U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Gunner Goose, piloted by chief pilot Theron Smith. Biologist Howard Sears assisted Ted Merrell. Subjects include Yukon River, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) North Slope oil drilling rigs, oil exploration tundra scars, Brooks Range, National Petroleum Reserve (NPR), Sagwon, Umiat, Fort Yukon, Bettels, and environmental impacts of the "Hickel Highway" ice road, such as irrevocable damage caused by tundra tracks. A "True Report" describing day-to-day events is included; photos are numbered chronologically. DDT contamination of fish in Alaska was limited to the vicinity of population centers and military bases, where the pesticide was used for mosquito control. No DDT was found in North Slope fish. Image of fish traps are not related to pesticide sampling work.
